How to select suitable molds for TPE materials? Should I choose a double-color mold or a secondary injection molding mold?

Molds are various templates and special tools used in industrialized production for injection molding, injection molding, and other methods to obtain the required goods. Simply put, a mold is a special tool used for shaping objects. This type of special tool is composed of various parts, and different molds are composed of different parts. It mainly relies on changes in the scientific conditions of the molding material to achieve the processing of the object's appearance. It has the title of "Mother of Industrial Production."

What is the difference between overmolding injection molds and two-color molds?

1. Overmolding Injection Mold

Overmolding molds do not necessarily inject two plastic materials on the same plastic machine. They are molded in two stages; after the product is removed from one mold, it is placed in another mold for a second injection molding process. Generally, this rubber and plastic processing process is usually performed by two molds, without the need for a professional two-color injection molding machine.

2. Two-color Mold

Two-color molds inject two plastic materials on the same plastic machine, in two stages. Two barrels, two nozzles, and the mold has two injection points, but the product is only demolded once. It is generally completed by one mold and requires a professional two-color injection molding machine.

The material processing of overmolding injection molds and two-color molds is very similar. Whether it is a two-color mold or an overmolding injection mold, hard and soft plastics are generally used for composite injection molding, and in 99% of cases, the hard plastic part is injected first, followed by the soft plastic part, because soft plastic is easily deformed.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Overmolding Injection Molds and Two-color Molds

1. Overmolding Mold

(1) Advantages: General plastic machines can be used for molding and processing, and the equipment investment is relatively small;

(2) Disadvantages: Not suitable for injection molding of fine two-material and multi-material injection molded parts; the molding and processing cycle is relatively long, and the productivity is lower than that of two-color molds.

2. Two-color Mold

(1) Advantages: Fast molding and processing, the appearance of the processed product is more beautiful, and fine two-color or even multi-color (multi-color or multi-material injection molding requires adding corresponding barrels and extruder screw melting equipment) products can be processed; for products with relatively high bonding difficulty, such as the bonding of hard plastic PA and soft plastic TPE, using two-color mold injection molding, compared with overmolding mold processing, the bonding effect of hard and soft plastics is better;

(2) Disadvantages: Two-color molds require professional two-color injection molding machines, but the engineering cost of two-color injection molding machines is much more expensive than that of ordinary plastic machines.
